My Philosophy of Web Design

There are many, many cost-effective ways to build a good website these days. Everyone wants responsive design, and most of my clients want to work with an established open-source technology like Joomla, Wordpress or Drupal. Building a site from scratch is rarely necessary. More than likely, we'll be able to use powerful existing frameworks like Gantry (Joomla) or Avada (Wordpress), or a nice commercial theme that I can re-skin for you.

My Specialties

Some of my favorite types of jobs include:

FULL WEBSITE BUILDS. This is where you hire me to build your site at the Photoshop level, then I convert it into a working responsive site. You provide me with all necessary content, and I populate the site. If your site has custom functions (a forum, front-end content submission, etc.), I'll show you how to use it. I love building websites in Joomla, Wordpress, Drupal or just about any open-source CMS.

WORDPRESS DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT. Wordpress is the world’s most popular CMS platform, and rightfully so. It’s easy to install, customize, maintain, and manage. It’s support for custom views is fantastic, and it also boasts a bustling community of extensions and developers. If you need a site built in Wordpress, consider me your go-to guy.

JOOMLA UPGRADES and MIGRATION. One of the drawbacks of the Joomla platform is that it's sometimes hard to upgrade, especially if you're still stuck with a Joomla 1.5 or 2.5 site. I perform upgrades from all families of Joomla to the latest version family. Bear in mind that if you're making the jump from 1.5, you will very likely want to get rid of your existing template and get a new one. (Moving from Joomla 1.5 to the newest version is a great time to upgrade to a responsive template!)

WEB DEVELOPMENT. Typically, you already have your design -- often a PSD or AI file or files -- and you need someone to convert it into a working site.

E-COMMERCE. I've worked with a variety of e-commerce platforms, including WooCommerce, VirtueMart, Squarespace, Magento, Prestashop and X-Cart.

CUSTOM CODING. I've modded just about every plugin or extension I've ever used, and I'm starting to build a few of my own. If you have an idea for a custom extension, get in touch and let's talk about how to make it happen.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT. If you need a team leader to get a big project done, consider me. For my most recent contract (see below), I built an employee Intranet for a Fortune 200 company. I worked with a dozen other developers and programmers to make it happen. I can offer familiarity and expertise with a wide variety of web platforms and technologies, and I also have a vast network of contacts in the industry. If you need to get it done, I can get it done.

Wencor Group Employee Intranet

For the Wencor Group, an aerospace company with a global presence, I was brought on to design an employee intranet. They'd already begun work on one in the Joomla framework, but they needed a fresh start and a Joomla expert to blaze a trail in a new and more productive direction. That's where I came in.

As the senior web developer, I fielded input from a team of stakeholders and consolidated views and functions from several of the company's existing internal sites. I designed the site at the Photoshop level, building out a fully custom theme in the Gantry framework. (I used the Helium theme as my foundation.) I made use of some of Joomla's most advanced extensions, including EasySocial, EasyDiscuss, Seblod, and many others. I built several custom functions, bringing to bear my skills with PHP, CSS, HTML, jQuery, as well as Joomla’s template override features. Also provided print design services to the marketing department.

City of Pasadena

For the City of Pasadena, I worked as one of four leads on project to redesign all of the city’s websites. I helped to implement responsive design across several new sites, including the fire department, city library, and department of information technology. I built out dozens of new pages, functions, forms, and graphics. I built custom module for the city’s landing page that offers users easy access to most vital city services. I built custom post type that generates a city org chart, as well as a simple module for the fire department that alerts users on restricted parking days.

MyTechnology — Employee Intranet for Energy Future Holdings, now Vistra Energy

MyTechnology is a content-driven intranet I built for Energy Future Holdings, a Fortune 200 company in Dallas, Texas.

I designed site at the Photoshop level before developing it in the Joomla CMS, making use of some of Joomla’s most advanced extensions, including the K2 CCK, JomSocial, RSEventsPro, DP-Calendar, AcyMailing, Art OrgChart, AllVideos, Lithe Login and many others. I built several custom views and functions, bringing to bear my skills with PHP, CSS, HTML, jQuery, as well as Joomla’s and K2’s template override features. I've customized virtually every function on the site, working in concert with a team of a half-dozen other contributors, developers and programmers. I maintained, managed, debugged and enhanced the site after its launch, adding new sections and functions as needed.

Note: This website is only viewable from a private network.

CC2K

One of my oldest sites, the pop-culture emporium CC2K attracts approximately 500,000 page views per month, all while competing for scoops with the biggest movie sites on the web. I took this site from concept to execution, and I've maintained it over the years through several redesigns and a full migration from Joomla 1.0 to 1.5., from 1.5 to 2.5, and most recently from 2.5 to the 3.x family.

This site is fully responsive, based on the Noozix theme.

Jewish World Watch

For this advocacy organization, I started with their existing website and redesigned it, incorporating a new look and responsive function based on the Wordpress WeStand theme. I also collaborated with the organization’s in-house designers and developers to maintain branding and to add several custom features, including shortcode-based layout, custom post types, and improved site search.

Civetta Property Group

These clients in Philadelphia needed a new site to showcase their property flips and renovation work. I built this Wordpress website starting with the Revelance theme and applying a custom skin. I also modified one of the site's views to deliver a better image gallery solution than what was offered with Revelance. In addition to development, I also provided these clients with a portion of their new logo and trained them on how to use the site's control panel.

This site is fully responsive.

California Coldblood Books

This fully responsive website is the primary web presence for my small book publishing company. It's got Joomla 3.x under the hood and uses the Tattoo Studio theme as its backbone.

Fanbase Press

I built this this content-driven website in Joomla 1.5 before migrating it to Joomla 2.5 and later to 3.5. It uses the K2 CCK to present its content. Starting with RocketTheme's Dominion template, I gave the site a fresh coat of paint and installed Akeeba Admin Tools to provide some extra security, as well as the Disqus commenting system to encourage user engagement.

MZ Speaks

This New York-based voiceover talent needed a quirky new look for her portfolio site. I worked closely with her to bring her vision to life. Virtually every element on this page was hand-built in Photoshop in one way or another. It's got Joomla under the hood with a few simple plugins for media delivery. In addition, I built a separate version of the site that's optimized for the iPad with automatic device detection.

Aspen Laurel Beauty Academy

This beauty school gave me an existing design that they wanted converted into a responsive Joomla website. I did just that, all while building out every page on the site and incorporating a variety of additional functions, including online forms, lightbox video presentation, and a chat feature.

East Northport Jewish Center

This synagogue in New York needed a powerful new website with an array of functionality. Starting with a commercial template, I upgraded her site from Joomla 1.5 to 2.5 and built a fully responsive custom look. I then developed the rest of the site, powering it with extensions to manage events and forms. In addition, I installed and configured plugins to handle photo galleries and video delivery. Last, I worked with their team leader on Skype to train her on how to use the site.

Park Slope Acupuncture

This acupunturist needed to upgrade her website from Joomla 1.0 to 2.5. I performed the upgrade and gave her a fresh new look, using a commercial template as the superstructure for a responsive website.

The Katniss Chronicles

These clients produced an unofficial audio drama based on Suzanne Collins' widely popular Hunger Games novels, and they needed an attractive website with which to promote it and deliver their episodes. I designed a logo and chose an appropriate commercial template that fit their needs; in this case, Gavick's MyFolio template. I also customized the internal templating with MyFolio's K2 structure to better suit these clients' needs.

Puffin Foundation

This job for New York-based firm TouchUStudio encompassed two sites: PuffinFoundation.org and PuffinCulturalForum.org. Working from a custom design provided by the client, I provided full PSD-to-Joomla conversion services, as well as full development services for these powerful sites, which make use of Community Builder, Kunena, RSEvents, Form2Content and a host of other extensions. Applicants for grants can submit their information, which is then dynamically converted into a full content page, all within the existing Joomla content structure.
